Guide them to define the essays as follows: Narrative essays tell about an experience or event. Descriptive essays give information about a topic. Persuasive essays aim to convince the audience of something.

Divide the class into three groups. Assign one group to brainstorm topics or examples of a narrative essay. Ask the second and third groups to do the same with descriptive and persuasive essays, respectively. Make the activity into a game by seeing which group can come up with the most examples. Then have groups share their ideas with the class.

List the examples on the board. Introduce the parts of a five-paragraph essay. Explain: Putting together an essay is like piecing together a puzzle.
